Dodona
After a jammed pack week of tests and essays combined with a steady six hours of class a day we had our last excursion before our 10 Easter break. The Dodona was an oracle devoted to a Mother Goddess identified at other sites with Rhea or Gaia, but here called Dione, who was joined and partly supplanted in historical times by the Greek god Zeus. The shrine of Dodona was regarded as the oldest Hellenic oracle, possibly dating to the second millennium BCE according to Herodotus. Situated in a remote region away from the main Greek poleis, it was considered second only to the oracle of Delphi in prestige. Priestesses and priests in the sacred grove interpreted the rustling of the oak (or beech) leaves to determine the correct actions to be taken. Aristotle considered the region around Dodona to have been part of Hellas and the region where the Hellenes originated.
Of course the historical stuff is nice and dandy but Linnie and I went around the whole sacred area touching the different monuments. Maturity at its finest. Currently packing for ten days in our backpacks (avoiding the costs of checking a bag on ryan air) and it is hard.... but also exciting. Its Linnie, two Pi Phis, Christina and Hillary and one Sigma Chi Michael and of course me are backpacking our way through Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and finally to end up in Amsterdam for the holiest of holy days for stoners worldwide ... 420
